The art of letting go: successful sustained strategies for navigating life transitions

Growth and expansion are part of life. We outgrow old jobs. Old homes. Old relationships. Old habits.

In fact, according to a study conducted by Life Reimagined, 70% of Americans aged 40 and older have made a significant life transition, such as changing careers or starting a business.

And while (of course!), all of this can be incredibly exciting…..it can also be uncomfortable. Anxiety often arises when we think about embarking on a new path. And the familiarity of our “old life” can feel so much safer than “the unknown.”

But the sense of restlessness we feel is essential feedback. I like to refer to it as “the squeeze” – the tell-tale sign that you have outgrown your past choices.

And it’s important to pay attention to this “divine discontent” so that you can fully realize ALL the dreams that have been written in your heart.

But how do you embrace the discomfort of a major life transition? And how do you navigate the discomfort of having evolved beyond your previous life path?

Read on, my friend!

Wanna learn how to overcome the fear of change? Just think of The Lobster Law

Did you know? Lobsters don’t stay in the same skeleton their whole lives?!?

A lobster has an exoskeleton, meaning – its entire “support system” is on the outside.

As it grows, it has to shed its old shell. And once their shell breaks, they are left “vulnerable” for 24-48 hours as their new shell hardens (it’s not immediate!).

….sound familiar?

Growth is uncomfortable. And the shift will often leave you feeling vulnerable. But there is SO MUCH joy, love, abundance, and FREEDOM on the other side.

This is the “Lobster Law.” And it applies to YOU and YOUR LIFE too.

How to navigate the discomfort of a major life transition

As we grow and change, it’s natural to outgrow our past life choices. Of course! – it can be uncomfortable, as it requires you to acknowledge that what once worked for us may no longer be the right fit.

Whether it’s a career path, a relationship, or a lifestyle, recognizing that we’ve outgrown our past choices can be a difficult (but important!) step toward personal growth and fulfillment.
Here are 6 ways to navigate the discomfort of having outgrown your past life choices (and stay abreast of the signs of transition in life):

1. Accept your feelings
It’s okay to feel uncomfortable or uncertain when you realize that you’ve outgrown your past life choices. Acknowledge your feelings and give yourself permission to feel them.

2. Identify what no longer works
Take time to pause, and reflect on the aspects of your life that no longer work for you. What is causing your discomfort? – and is there feedback waiting for you?

3. Consider your values and goals
Reconnect with your values and goals to gain clarity on what’s important to you now. This can help you to make decisions that align with your current priorities.

4. Explore new options
Once you’ve identified what no longer works, explore new options that align with your values and goals. Keep in mind…this change doesn’t necessarily have to be dramatic.

5. Take action
Taking action can be scary, but it’s necessary if you want to create a life that aligns with who you are now. Don’t be afraid of change — start by taking small steps towards your new goals and build momentum from there.

6. Seek support
Surround yourself with people who support and encourage you. This could be friends, family, or a coach who can help you navigate the challenges of making changes in your life.

Remember, feeling discomfort when you outgrow your past life choices is totally normal.

By accepting your feelings, identifying what no longer works, reconnecting with your values and goals, exploring new options, taking action, and seeking support, you can navigate the discomfort and create a life that aligns with who you are now.

It may not be easy, but the rewards of living a life that aligns with your true self can be absolutely incredible.
